My Second Blog Post

Growing up I used Microsoft Word. There was no other option as far as I knew. I even took a class in the seventh grade where we learned how to type well and did a lot of stuff with excel and word. I didn't retain most of it, besides being a good typer! I used word until probably high school, I feel like something in high school made me switch. Collaborating with someone on google docs, or maybe having my own computer, or something for an assignment, I'm not sure. But now I exclusively use google docs. I don't like using word, because I'm unfamiliar with it, it doesn't save automatically, and it doesn't save all in one easy place (I could solve this by having a folder on my computer for my work, but if I went onto another device I wouldn't have access to it.) I also like that I can share documents easily with people and collaborate on them on google docs.

There were lots of good options for the ISTE standards, but in terms of technology use, I think designer is the most important to me. As a potential band director, I will have a lot of different students coming through my classroom, with many different learning styles and speeds. While we may work as large groups on ensemble music, I think there is a big opportunity for individual learning. Using video submissions and online software to help my students learn new skills and show off what they learned could be a great tool for me, especially since I can do it on my terms and make the lesson plans, just using the technology as a guide.

I kindof agree with the idea of a digital native being the younger generation. In general I think younger people, especially gen z, are really good with technology, but it really depends on if they have a need to use it (most of us do nowadays). I think older people have a harder time because they are used to something else, and don't like change, as I can already see in myself now that I've gotten so used to google docs. I even hate when my phone updates and everything looks different. It's all about exposure. The older generations were probably really good with their technology, while us younger people wouldn't know where to start. I would say all of my teachers interact with technology in some way, the younger ones moreso than older ones. It can be helpful, like smartmusic that my band director had us use in highschool, but sometimes I don't love having to do a bunch of stuff online for my classes.
